The longevity glossary.

What the tests, treatments, and consultations on offer at longevity clinics actually are, in plain language. Definitions only, with no claim about whether any of them works: that question is answered on the protocol pages, where the evidence is graded.

A

Advanced lipid panelDiagnostic
Measures ApoB and lipoprotein(a) alongside a standard lipid profile. Both are markers of cardiovascular risk that a routine cholesterol test does not report.

B

Biological age testingDiagnostic
Estimates a biological age from DNA methylation patterns and reports it against chronological age. Different laboratories use different clocks, so results are not directly comparable between providers.

C

Comprehensive biomarker panelDiagnostic
A blood panel covering metabolic, lipid, inflammatory, hormonal and organ-function markers in one draw, reported together rather than as separate tests.
Continuous glucose monitoringDiagnostic
A wearable sensor recording interstitial glucose continuously for one to two weeks, showing the response to meals, sleep and activity rather than a single fasting figure.
Contrast therapyTherapy
Alternating heat and cold exposure in one session, usually sauna paired with cold immersion.

D

DEXA body composition scanDiagnostic
A low-dose X-ray scan reporting fat mass, lean mass and bone mineral density by body region.
Dry flotationTherapy
A session lying on a membrane suspended over warm water, giving the sensation of floating without contact with the water.

E

Executive health screeningDiagnostic
A scheduled programme bundling bloods, imaging, functional testing and a consultation, usually completed in one visit with a written report.

F

Functional medicine consultationConsult
A consultation model organised around systems and root-cause framing. Functional medicine certification is separate from, and not a substitute for, medical registration.

G

Genomic testingDiagnostic
Sequences selected genes or the whole genome to report inherited disease risk variants and pharmacogenomic markers.
GLP-1 receptor agonist therapyIntervention
Prescribes semaglutide, tirzepatide or a related agent for weight and metabolic management, with clinical monitoring. These are prescription-only medicines in both markets.
Gut microbiome testingDiagnostic
Sequences bacterial DNA in a stool sample to describe the composition of the gut microbiome. Clinical interpretation of these profiles is still developing.

H

Hormone optimisationIntervention
Assesses and treats sex and thyroid hormone levels, including menopausal hormone therapy and testosterone replacement, under prescription and monitoring.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapyTherapy
Breathing oxygen at above atmospheric pressure in a sealed chamber, in repeated sessions. Approved indications are narrow in both markets and do not include general healthy ageing.

I

ImmunotherapyIntervention
Treatments that modulate immune function. Coverage of this term varies widely between clinics, from licensed oncology protocols to unapproved immune-modulating infusions.
Intravenous nutrient therapyIntervention
Delivers vitamins, minerals or amino acids intravenously, usually as a scheduled infusion.

L

Liquid biopsy cancer screeningDiagnostic
A blood test looking for circulating tumour DNA to screen for cancer before symptoms. Sensitivity varies substantially by cancer type and stage.
Longevity physician consultationConsult
Clinician time to review results and agree a plan. Whether that clinician is registered with SMC or AHPRA is recorded separately on each person profile.

N

NAD+ and precursor therapyIntervention
Administers NAD+ intravenously, or its precursors NMN or NR orally, to raise NAD+ availability. Regulatory status of the precursors differs between Singapore and Australia.
Nutrition and dieteticsConsult
Dietary assessment and planning with a dietitian or nutritionist. Dietitian is a protected title in Australia; nutritionist is not.

P

PEMF therapyTherapy
Applies pulsed electromagnetic fields to the body via a mat or coil.
Peptide therapyIntervention
Prescribes short amino-acid chains for signalling effects. Many peptides used in this setting are unapproved for the indication in one or both markets, so the regulatory position matters case by case.

R

Red light therapyTherapy
Exposure to red and near-infrared light from panels or beds, in repeated sessions.

S

Sleep studyDiagnostic
Records breathing, oxygen saturation, heart rate and movement overnight, at home or in a laboratory, to identify sleep-disordered breathing.
Stem cell therapyIntervention
Administers cell preparations, usually mesenchymal stromal cells. Tightly restricted in both markets: Australia limits autologous cell treatments and Singapore regulates them as advanced therapy products.

T

Telehealth consultationConsult
Consultation by video or phone rather than in person, which is how nationally available operators reach patients outside their clinic city.

V

VO2 max testingDiagnostic
Measures maximum oxygen uptake during graded exercise while breath gases are analysed, reported as a cardiorespiratory fitness figure.

W

Whole-body cryotherapyTherapy
Brief exposure of the whole body to very low air temperature, typically two to three minutes in a chamber.
Whole-body MRIDiagnostic
A non-contrast scan of the body used to look for structural abnormality. Screening asymptomatic people this way is contested: it finds incidental results that often need follow-up.

A definition is not an endorsement. Where a treatment has been graded, the protocol page carries the evidence and the regulator position.
